Changelog

Every release, in the words the update prompt used.

Newest first. The app checks for these once a day and asks before it installs one.

  1. Version 0.3.3

    Latest

A clear message when a file name has a character the phone does not accept.

    • Android refuses to create or rename a file whose name contains any of " * : < > ? \ |, on internal storage and on SD cards alike. SideMount now says so at once, as a name error, instead of letting the copy fail halfway with a permission error. Rename the file on your Mac first. A file that already has such a name on the phone still opens, copies to the Mac and deletes as usual.
  2. Version 0.3.2

Crash diagnostics help us find and fix problems in SideMount.

    • SideMount can now send limited crash reports to Sentry. Reports exclude file contents, file and device names, paths, credentials and user details.
    • Crash diagnostics are on by default. Turn them off at any time under Settings > Privacy > Share crash diagnostics. Your choice is saved and takes effect immediately.
    • An existing opt-out from anonymous usage data also keeps crash diagnostics off on upgrade, unless you turn them on separately.
  3. Version 0.3.1

Small files and photos copy to the phone faster, and a file the phone refused can no longer come back as an empty one.

    • Small files copy to the phone about 1.6 times as fast. A new file now reaches the phone in one step, where it used to be created empty and then written again. On our test phone, 3,000 files of 32 KB took about 75 seconds instead of about 125.
    • Photos copy to the phone faster too: 400 photos of 5 MB at about 95 MB/s instead of about 70.
    • Fixed: when the phone refused a file, a program that then set the file's date or size could leave an empty copy of it on the phone.
  4. Version 0.3.0

Large files copy much faster over the cable, a stall that could stop a copy is fixed, and SideMount now sends anonymous usage data, which you can turn off.

    • Large files move about 1.6 to 1.7 times as fast over USB 3. On our test phone a 4.5 GB video now copies to the phone at about 265 MB/s and back at about 280 MB/s. Photos are quicker to read, too.
    • Fixed a stall on some USB 3 phones: a long copy could stop part way and leave the phone offline until it was unplugged.
    • SideMount now sends anonymous usage data, such as a phone being mounted or a mount failing, to help us fix what fails. It never includes file names, contents, serial numbers or your licence key. Turn it off in Settings, under Privacy.
    • When a trial ends, or when you click Activate after buying, the panel now opens on the plans page instead of home.
  5. Version 0.2.0

SideMount now sells itself. Checkout, licence keys and billing run on sidemount.app with Stripe taking the payment, instead of a third party store.

    • Buying from the Plans page opens a Stripe checkout, and the page you land on afterwards activates the licence in the app, as before.
    • The Billing row in Settings opens your own customer portal: change a card, cancel, or download an invoice.
    • Activating a key no longer sends your Mac's name anywhere.
    • Existing keys keep working with no action needed.
  6. Version 0.1.1

    SideMount 0.1.1

    • The Monthly and Lifetime buttons on the Plans page open the checkout again. In 0.1.0 they led to a page that no longer exists.
  7. Version 0.1.0

    SideMount 0.1.0

    The first release.

    • Plug an Android phone in and it appears as a volume in Finder. Files copy both ways at the speed of the cable, with nothing to install on the phone.
    • A phone on Android 11 or later can also be paired over Wi-Fi, once, by scanning a QR code or typing the six digit code. After that it appears whenever it is on the same network.
    • Several phones mount at once, each as its own volume. An SD card appears as a folder at the top of the phone's volume.
    • The setup guide in the panel walks through the file system extension and USB debugging, and ticks each step off as you do it.
    • Eject lets go of the phone, so your own adb can reach it without quitting SideMount.
    • Seven day trial with no card, then a monthly plan or a lifetime licence, each on up to three Macs.
    • Updates ask before they install. Nothing is sent anywhere except the licence check and the update feed.
